Barb Chamberlain has served as the first director of the Active Transportation Division at Washington State Department of Transportation since it was created in March of 2017 in a reflection of the agency’s commitment to multimodal transportation. In this role she leads policy, planning and capacity building for walking, rolling, and other forms of accessible, healthy, sustainable and equitable active transportation. Previously she served in numerous civic volunteer roles in transportation and health, including an MPO board and a regional health foundation. Before coming to WSDOT Chamberlain was executive director of Washington Bikes, the statewide advocacy organization; headed public affairs work for a research university campus; and served in the Idaho State legislature as a state representative and senator. She holds a master’s in public administration from Eastern Washington University and B.A.s in English and Linguistics from Washington State University and has received numerous awards for her active transportation leadership.
