Jessica Cronstein is the Senior Urban Designer with the Public Space Unit and the NYC DOT. In her role at DOT, Jessica works with community based organizations to bring public realm improvements to their neighborhoods. Her projects range in scale and impact from small interventions such as StreetSeats, turning parking spaces into public spaces, Shared Streets, rebalancing streets to prioritize pedestrians while maintaining vehicular access, up to major public space projects such as the 2019 Herald Square redesign. During COVID-19, the Public Space Unit used their background in working with partners and transforming streets to develop a suite of recovery based programs such as Open Streets, Open Restaurants, and Open Streets: Restaurants. Building on the successes of those recovery programs Jessica is currently working on how to translate those softer, more flexible interventions into lasting changes to the composition of our streets.
