Mary Beth Kelly, ACSW, serves on the Board of Directors and the Advisory Council of
Transportation Alternatives and is a co-founder of Families for Safe Streets.
In June of 2006, Mary Beth with her husband, Dr. Carl Henry Nacht were cycling
together — as they had done for thirty-five years — when Henry was hit in the
crosswalk by a tow truck. He died several days later from his injuries.
Immediately following his death, she knocked on TA’s door — the only organization
in NYC addressing traffic violence. With them she worked to channel rage and grief
into advocacy and activism. Her vision, like TA’s, is cities reclaimed from the
domination of the automobile for walking, biking, and public transportation.
